Information effects on consumer preferences for alternative animal feedstuffs

Brianne A. Altmann et al.

Summary: This study used a discrete choice experiment to understand German consumers' preferences for chicken breast produced using insect meal or spirulina algae as alternatives to traditional soy-based feed. The results show that most consumers prefer to purchase chicken produced with insect meal when informed about the feed-type used, while mainstream consumers may be hesitant to purchase chicken produced with insect feed.

Current Status of the Algae Production Industry in Europe: An Emerging Sector of the Blue Bioeconomy

Rita Araujo et al.

Summary: The EU Bioeconomy Strategy is aimed at supporting the sustainable growth of EU bio-based sectors, including algae production. This study reveals significant gaps in knowledge about algae production in Europe, but also highlights the potential of the sector. Algae and Spirulina biomass is primarily used for food and food-related applications, with technological, regulatory, and market barriers limiting further development despite the considerable potential for sustainable growth in the European algae sector.

Total Replacement of Fishmeal by Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) and Its Effect on Growth Performance and Product Quality of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)

Simon Rosenau et al.

Summary: A study found that replacing fishmeal entirely with Spirulina can slow down the growth of African catfish, while feed conversion ratio remains stable and the fish exhibit a more intense coloration. Fatty acid analysis showed that certain fatty acids were significantly higher in the Spirulina-fed group.
