All-perovskite tandem solar cells with improved grain surface passivation

Renxing Lin et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed ammonium-cation-passivated Pb-Sn perovskites with long diffusion lengths, enabling high-efficiency all-perovskite tandem solar cells. By enhancing the adsorption of the passivator using a stronger surface-passivator interaction, the carrier diffusion length within Pb-Sn perovskites is doubled, resulting in an efficiency of over 22%. The certified efficiency of 26.4% achieved in the all-perovskite tandem solar cells exceeds that of the best-performing single-junction perovskite solar cells.

Perovskite-organic tandem solar cells with indium oxide interconnect

K. O. Brinkmann et al.

Summary: Multijunction solar cells can surpass the efficiency limits of single-junction devices. Metal halide perovskite solar cells, in combination with silicon and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) or as all-perovskite tandems, have shown promising results. Narrow-gap non-fullerene acceptors have also significantly improved the efficiencies of organic solar cells. In this study, perovskite-organic tandem cells with high efficiency and voltage are demonstrated, utilizing optimized charge extraction layers and an ultrathin metal-like indium oxide layer for interconnection. This milestone work outperforms the best perovskite single junctions and is comparable to perovskite-CIGS and all-perovskite multijunctions.

Perovskite solar cells with atomically coherent interlayers on SnO2 electrodes

Hanul Min et al.

Summary: By introducing an interlayer between the electron-transporting and perovskite layers in perovskite solar cells, researchers have successfully enhanced charge extraction and transport from the perovskite, leading to higher power conversion efficiency and fewer interfacial defects. The coherent interlayer allowed the fabrication of devices with a certified efficiency of 25.5%, which maintained about 90% of its initial efficiency even after continuous light exposure for 500 hours. The findings provide guidelines for designing defect-minimizing interfaces in metal halide perovskites and electron-transporting layers.

Ligand-engineered bandgap stability in mixed-halide perovskite LEDs

Yasser Hassan et al.

Summary: By utilizing multidentate ligands to treat mixed-halide perovskite nanocrystals, efficient and color-stable red electroluminescence with a wavelength centered at 620 nanometers and an external quantum efficiency of 20.3% has been achieved. The key function of the ligand treatment is to 'clean' the nanocrystal surface by removing lead atoms, which suppresses the formation of iodine Frenkel defects and halide segregation. This work demonstrates the sensitivity of metal halide perovskites to surface properties and provides a pathway to control surface defect formation and migration, crucial for achieving bandgap stability for light emission and potentially impacting other optoelectronic applications.
