Raman Spectroscopy as a Key Method to Distinguish the Ferroelectric Orthorhombic Phase in Thin ZrO2-Based Films

Monica Materano et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of inducing and detecting the polar orthorhombic phase in HfO2- and ZrO2-based thin films. Traditional structural characterization techniques are not accurate enough, hence the use of Raman spectroscopy to differentiate different phases. By comparing experimental and computational Raman spectra, the phase assignment can be determined, allowing for the prediction of ferroelectricity in the layers.

Ferroelectric Phase Content in 7 nm Hf(1-x)ZrxO2 Thin Films Determined by X-Ray-Based Methods

Vineetha Mukundan et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of ferroelectric behavior in hafnia-based dielectrics attributed to the formation of noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic phase has opened up potential uses in numerous applications. This study reports the relative amounts of ferroelectric orthorhombic phase in thin films of three different compositions and verifies the ferroelectric behavior through polarization measurements. The assessment of relative phase percentages using GIXRD and GI-EXAFS methods provides insights into the structure-property function correlation in these ultrathin hafnia-zirconia films.

Chemical bonding and Born charge in 1T-HfS2

S. N. Neal et al.

Summary: In this study, infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies were utilized to investigate the properties of 1T-HfS2. By analyzing the LO-TO splitting of the E-u vibrational mode and reevaluating the mode mass, unit cell volume, and dielectric constant, the Born effective charge was revealed to be ZB* = 5.3e, in agreement with first-principles calculations. Furthermore, the Born charge was decomposed into polarizability and local charge, with polar displacement-induced charge transfer from sulfur p to hafnium d being a key factor in the enhanced Born charge. The findings suggest that 1T-HfS2 is an ionic crystal with strong and dynamic covalent effects.
