Dissipative Kerr solitons in semiconductor ring lasers

Bo Meng et al.

Summary: Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves that arise from the interaction between the Kerr effect and dispersion, forming in nonlinear microresonators by tuning the parameters of the external pump laser. The experimental observation of dissipative Kerr solitons in a ring cavity with a fast semiconductor gain medium extends the spectral range of soliton microcombs to mid-infrared wavelengths, showing potential for integrated, battery-driven spectrometers in the molecular fingerprint region.

High Power Mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers Grown on GaAs

Steven Slivken et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving high-power InP-based intersubband lasers on substrates with significant lattice mismatch. This is important for integrating mid-infrared active optoelectronic devices onto low-cost photonic platforms like Si. An InP-based mid-infrared quantum cascade laser structure was grown on a GaAs substrate with a large lattice mismatch. A metamorphic buffer layer of InP was grown on the GaAs substrate prior to laser core growth to adjust the lattice constant. The results showed that the fabricated lasers had high peak power (>14 W) at room temperature, indicating the potential for direct quantum cascade laser growth on Si substrates.

Controlling Quantum Cascade Laser Optical Frequency Combs through Microwave Injection

Barbara Schneider et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the control of the emitted state from quantum cascade laser frequency combs through strong radio-frequency current modulation, achieving adjustments in spectral bandwidth and center frequency. Different spectral characteristics can be achieved at different modulation frequencies, allowing for the generation of multiple spectral regions on the same device.

Engineering the spectral bandwidth of quantum cascade laser frequency combs

Maximilian Beiser et al.

Summary: This work investigates the optimization of comb spectral width and demonstrates how the maximum value defined by laser gain bandwidth can be achieved. Nonoptimal values of resonant Kerr nonlinearity and cavity dispersion can significantly narrow the comb spectrum. Implementing high mirror losses and injection locking allows for control of frequency-modulated comb state.

Frequency Comb Generation by Bloch Gain Induced Giant Kerr Nonlinearity

Nikola Opacak et al.

Summary: Optical nonlinearities can coherently couple amplitude and phase of light, forming periodic waveforms known as optical frequency combs. The study shows that Bloch gain, a nonclassical phenomenon predicted in the 1930s, plays an essential role in comb formation, leading to a giant Kerr nonlinearity and the formation of solitonlike structures, paving the way for electrically driven Kerr combs.
