Morphology controlled synthesis of α-Fe2O3-x with benzimidazole-modified Fe-MOFs for enhanced photo-Fenton-like catalysis

Wenkai Xu et al.

Summary: Surface structure engineering plays a crucial role in enhancing the photo-Fenton-like catalytic performance of alpha-Fe2O3-based photocatalysts. The rod-like alpha-Fe2O3-x material exhibited the highest activity for methylene blue degradation, attributed to its large surface area, high Fe2+ and oxygen vacancies concentrations. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that both Fe2+ ions and oxygen vacancies facilitate the dissociation of H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals for the degradation of organic dyes.

Accelerated photocatalytic degradation of iohexol over Co3O4/g-C3N4/Bi2O2CO3 of p-n/n-n dual heterojunction under simulated sunlight by persulfate

Weiming Xiang et al.

Summary: The novel Co3O4/g-C3N4/Bi2O2CO3 (BCCN) photocatalyst with p-n/n-n heterojunction was synthesized, which showed significantly improved degradation efficiency for iohexol in the presence of persulfate and light. The addition of g-C3N4 lowered the conduction band of the catalyst, leading to the production of superoxide radicals and activation of persulfate. The interaction between sulfate, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals enhanced singlet oxygen production, ultimately providing a new method for degrading organic pollutants in aquatic environments.

Modifying organic carbon in Fe3O4-loaded schwertmannite to improve heterogeneous Fenton activity through accelerating Fe(II) generation

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in heterogeneous Fenton is inefficient, but introducing magnetic Fe3O4 during the synthesis of biogenic schwertmannite (Sch) can enhance the catalytic activity. Fe3O4-loaded Sch with organic carbon (Fe3O4/Sch/C) shows much higher degradation activity for fluoroquinolone antibiotics compared to other catalysts, mainly due to the more electrons provided by organic carbons promoting Fe(II) generation in heterogeneous Fenton.

Hongyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This review systematically summarized the origins, development, basic mechanism, and limits of reductant-enhanced iron-based peroxide activation processes. It was found that the use of reductants could accelerate the reduction of Fe3+ and quench the production of reactive species, with the trade-off determined by intrinsic chemical properties and experimental conditions. Additionally, practical application potential of different reductants based on toxicity, costs, and self-transformation products was evaluated, and new enhancement strategies were proposed for future research needs.
