Models predict planned phosphorus load reduction will make Lake Erie more toxic

Ferdi L. Hellweger et al.

Summary: This study conducted a large-scale meta-analysis and found that the succession of harmful cyanobacteria strains is mainly influenced by cellular oxidative stress mitigation strategies and nitrogen limitation. The simulation results showed that reducing phosphorus load can decrease the biomass of cyanobacteria, but increase toxin production and concentration.

Interspecific protection against oxidative stress: green algae protect harmful cyanobacteria against hydrogen peroxide

Erik F. J. Weenink et al.

Summary: Oceanographic studies have shown that heterotrophic bacteria can protect marine cyanobacteria against oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide. In freshwater ecosystems, less-sensitive green algae can protect cyanobacteria by degrading H2O2 faster and providing antioxidant enzymes. The level of protection depends on the density of green algae.

Linkage between bacterial community-mediated hydrogen peroxide detoxification and the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa

Minkyung Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that under high light and organic-rich conditions, bacteria communities with H2O2 resistance can promote the growth and photosynthetic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa, with Alphaproteobacteria playing a key role, likely by protecting them from the toxicity of H2O2. These bacterial communities have higher catalase activity levels and faster rates of O2 production upon H2O2 detoxification.

The genetic and ecophysiological diversity of Microcystis

Gregory J. Dick et al.

Summary: In this study, the importance of diversity within Microcystis and the potential genetic and phenotypic traits that differentiate taxa are synthesized. Spatial and environmental patterns of Microcystis diversity, as well as evidence for cohesive groups within the genus, are briefly reviewed. Data on strain-level diversity in growth responses and variations in community interactions across strains are compiled and discussed to identify potential links and tradeoffs between traits.
