Estuarine retention of larvae: Contrasting effects of behavioral responses to turbulence and waves

Jessica C. Garwood et al.

Summary: This study found that the intensity of small-scale fluid motions in different coastal seascapes affects the behavioral adaptations of planktonic larvae. Larvae of different species have different responses to hydrodynamic signals, which in turn affect larval retention and settlement. Numerical experiments showed that downward motions promote retention and settlement in estuaries, while upward motions facilitate larvae export onto the continental shelf. Vorticity-induced behaviors, compared to neutral buoyancy, also provide advantages such as longer residence times in the bay, higher settlement probabilities, and shorter pelagic larval durations.

Diurnal Thermally Driven Cross-Shore Exchange in Steady Alongshore Currents

Aryan Safaie et al.

Summary: Numerical modeling is used to study how cross-shore flow is affected by steady alongshore currents and shear-generated turbulence. The results show that shear-driven vertical mixing reduces temperature gradients and decreases cross-shore thermal exchange with increasing alongshore current speed. Alongshore flow can enhance or diminish the baroclinic cross-shore exchange flow, depending on its strength, ultimately leading to a dominance of Ekman dynamics for exchange.

The Inner-Shelf Dynamics Experiment

Nirnimesh Kumar et al.

Summary: The inner shelf, the transition zone between the surfzone and the midshelf, is a dynamically complex region where circulation and stratification are driven by multiple physical processes. Cross-shelf exchange through the inner shelf has important implications for coastal water quality, ecological connectivity, and lateral movement of sediment and heat. The Inner-Shelf Dynamics Experiment (ISDE) conducted in Point Sal, California in 2017 investigated key physical processes such as internal wave dynamics, flow separation, eddy shedding, offshore ejection of surfzone waters, and wind-driven subtidal circulation dynamics, providing valuable insights into the dynamics governing the circulation and transport in the inner shelf.

The Grounding of Floating Objects in a Marginal Sea

R. Pawlowicz

Summary: The study analyzed 800 groundings of floating objects on beaches, finding that while the grounding process for individual drifters can be complex, the complexities of coastlines can be statistically summarized. The analysis revealed that groundings are slightly more likely to occur at higher tides, with coastal friction affecting the velocity structure of floating objects.

Vorticity Recirculation and Asymmetric Generation at a Small Headland With Broadband Currents

Summary: Fixed acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) velocity measurements are used to study vorticity generation and recirculation around the central California headland Pt. Sal. Observations show that the depth-averaged flow primarily follows bathymetric contours, while vorticity distributions are skewed and asymmetric at west and south locations.

Warm and Cool Nearshore Plumes Connecting the Surf Zone to the Inner Shelf

M. Moulton et al.

Summary: The cross-shore transport of larvae, pollutants, and sediment between the surf zone and the inner shelf plays a crucial role in coastal water quality and ecosystems. Rip currents are identified as a dominant pathway for this exchange, with warm plumes exhibiting more lateral spreading and buoyant transport characteristics compared to cool plumes. Future research may examine the sensitivity of nearshore plumes to density patterns, wave forcing, and bathymetry.

The self-similar stratified inner-shelf response to transient rip-current-induced mixing

Derek J. Grimes et al.

Summary: The study examines the stratified inner-shelf response to surf-zone-generated transient rip currents (TRC) and finds that the response is influenced by key dimensional parameters N-0 and d(s). TRC mixing increases background potential energy and available potential energy, driving inner-shelf mean circulation, while shoreward mixing by TRC forms a self-similar far-field intrusion.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of alongshore-varying bathymetry on surf zone vorticity and velocity fields, finding that the variable bathymetry significantly affects kinetic energy but has minor impact on transient components. It shows that wave directional spreading plays a crucial role in enstrophy and vorticity forcing, with alongshore-varying bathymetry impacting total exchange velocity slightly.
