ICESat-2 Elevation Retrievals in Support of Satellite-Derived Bathymetry for Global Science Applications

Benjamin J. Babbel et al.

Summary: This research aims to establish and test a baseline methodology for generating bathymetric surface models using SDB with ICESat-2. The workflow is operationally efficient and capable of producing bathymetry of sufficient vertical accuracy for many coastal science applications. Further automation priorities have been identified to support the long-term goal of global coral reef habitat change analysis.

The Prospect of Global Coral Reef Bathymetry by Combining Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 Altimetry With Multispectral Satellite Imagery

Arthur C. R. Gleason et al.

Summary: Empirical methods for estimating shallow-water bathymetry using passive multispectral satellite imagery are effective, but require local measurements of water depth for calibration. NASA's ICESat-2, equipped with LiDAR technology, has shown potential in filling the data gap and generating accurate bathymetric profiles.

Summary: Accurate knowledge of coastal bathymetry is essential for various applications, with traditional surveying methods requiring high-cost resources. Space technology offers a cost-effective alternative, with optical satellite data providing potential solutions in near-shore regions after decades of research and algorithm development for Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB).

Statistical properties of wave kinematics in long-crested irregular waves propagating over non-uniform bathymetry

C. Lawrence et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical evidence suggest that nonuniform bathymetry can significantly alter the statistical properties of surface elevation in irregular wave fields. When long-crested irregular waves propagate into shallower water, the probability of rogue waves increases near the edge of the upslope. The statistics of horizontal fluid velocity differ from those of surface elevation, especially in cases of abrupt depth changes in shallow water, with non-Gaussian statistics observed.

Workflow for the Generation of Expert-Derived Training and Validation Data: A View to Global Scale Habitat Mapping

Chris M. Roelfsema et al.

Summary: The ability to map natural environments at a global scale has significantly improved over the past decade, with advances in online satellite image archives and spatial and temporal resolution. However, the challenge lies in training and validating these programs due to lack of resources and standardized methods. The approach presented involves stratifying coral reefs into biogeographic regions, compiling reference datasets, and using expert interpretation to label segments for training and validation. Transparent processes are crucial for usability of global mapping products for science and conservation.

Vertical distribution of subsurface phytoplankton layer in South China Sea using airborne lidar

Peng Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted quantitative measurements of the vertical distribution of subsurface phytoplankton layer in the South China Sea using airborne lidar, revealing spatial and temporal variability in the depths of these layers in Sanya Bay and near Lingshui city. Lidar technology shows great potential for wide-range and long-term monitoring of subsurface phytoplankton layers, complementing in situ observations and passive satellite remote sensing.

Summary: The study found that climate change has led to a decrease in sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, impacting the distribution of phytoplankton. Measurements using airborne profiling lidar showed that attenuation and scattering were greater in open water compared to under the ice, indicating different phytoplankton assemblages.

Intercalibration of MERIS, MODIS, and OLCI Satellite Imagers for Construction of Past, Present, and Future Cyanobacterial Biomass Time Series

Timothy T. Wynne et al.

Summary: Satellite imagery has been utilized for over twelve years to monitor and assess Harmful Algal Blooms, specifically cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Erie in the USA and Canada, with a key algorithm called the cyanobacterial index (CI) to measure chlorophyll levels. The monitoring system began with the European Space Agency's (ESA) MERIS sensor and transitioned to NASA's MODIS sensor after 2012, with the introduction of the OLCI sensor in 2016 as a replacement for MERIS. This integrated technique allows for intercalibration of the CI algorithm from MODIS to MERIS and OLCI, providing a continuous record of cyanobacterial bloom activity.

Summary: Coral reefs are undergoing changes mainly due to coastal development, resource use, and climate change. To effectively monitor and support management decisions, a robust and spatially explicit monitoring approach is necessary. The study developed an airborne-assisted method to design and upscale field surveys of reef fish, resulting in actionable trend data for the reef study area on Hawaii Island.
