Aligning Patient Acuity With Resource Intensity After Major Surgery A Scoping Review

Tyler J. Loftus et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to develop unified definitions and paradigms for data-driven methods to enhance postoperative resource intensity decisions. The analysis of 35 studies found that accurate representation of preoperative patient acuity and intraoperative physiological data can optimize the value of postoperative resource intensity decisions. Triage of low-acuity patients to intensive care units may cause harm, and providing high-intensity care for low-acuity patients may lead to unnecessary testing and treatment. Compared to data-driven models, clinicians exhibit unstable performance in predicting complications and making postoperative resource intensity decisions.
