Competing for supply and demand: Understanding retailers' ordering decisions

Sebastian Villa

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the bullwhip effect on supply chains, particularly in the presence of horizontal competition among retailers. Through the development of a mathematical model and two behavioral studies, it examines the influence of supplier's responsiveness, customers' overreaction, and capacity allocation on retailers' decisions. The results reveal the limited ability of participants to mitigate the bullwhip effect, highlight the significant role of supply competition on ordering decisions, and suggest that adjusting the supplier's allocation mechanism can effectively reduce order variability.

Measuring and eliminating the bullwhip in closed loop supply chains using control theory and Internet of Things

Christos Papanagnou

Summary: Closed-loop supply chains are complex systems involving the flow of products and information. A novel four-echelon closed-loop supply chain model is presented in this paper, analysing the impact of replenishment policies and product return rates on the bullwhip effect. An optimisation method is introduced to study the influence of the Internet of Things on inventory variance and the bullwhip effect, showing that IoT can reduce costs and eliminate the bullwhip effect in closed-loop supply chains.

Forward or backward: The Impact of Vertical Integration Direction on the bullwhip effect

Jing Liang et al.

Summary: The bullwhip effect is a major cause of supply chain inefficiency, and vertical integration is seen as a solution to this issue. This study empirically investigates the impact of forward and backward vertical integration on the bullwhip effect, as well as the moderating role of a company's supply chain position, using a large dataset of Chinese listed firms.
