Near-IR Absorbing Molecular Semiconductors Incorporating Cyanated Benzothiadiazole Acceptors for High-Performance Semitransparent n-Type Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Panagiota Kafourou et al.

Summary: This study presents two near-infrared n-type small molecule semiconductors synthesized using an A-D-A approach, with the addition of molecular spacers to achieve very low band gaps. The solid-state ordering and charge carrier mobility vary significantly depending on the nature of the spacer, with OFETs fabricated using a thiophene spacer demonstrating excellent electron mobility. The use of silver nanowires as the gate electrode enables the fabrication of a semitransparent OFET device with high optical transmission.

n-Type Organic and Polymeric Semiconductors Based on Bithiophene Imide Derivatives

Kui Feng et al.

Summary: In the last three decades, there has been significant progress in p-type organic and polymeric semiconductors, while development in n-type analogues has been limited by the scarcity of highly electron-deficient building blocks. Imide-functionalized arenes, such as NDI and PDI, have shown promise in developing n-type semiconductors, but face challenges like steric hindrance and backbone distortion. Designing novel imide-functionalized heteroarenes like BTI, and optimizing their structure, has led to the development of high-performance n-type semiconductors with suppressed FMO levels.

Cyano-Functionalized Bithiophene Imide-Based n-Type Polymer Semiconductors: Synthesis, Structure-Property Correlations, and Thermoelectric Performance

Kui Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of novel acceptor building blocks, CNI, CNTI, and CNDTI, were successfully developed by introducing strong electron-withdrawing cyano functionality on BTI and its derivatives. Based on these novel building blocks, high-performance n-type polymers with deep-positioned LUMOs were synthesized, showing excellent stability and doping efficiency. These polymers exhibit the highest electrical conductivity of 23.3 S m-1 and a power factor of up to 10 mu W m-1 K-2, which are among the highest values reported for solution-processed molecularly n-doped polymers.
