Reduction of tert-butylphosphaalkyne and trimethylsilylnitrile with magnesium(I) dimers

Daniel W. N. Wilson et al.

Summary: The reactivity of magnesium(I) dimers towards phosphaalkynes depends on their steric profiles, leading to different product selectivities. The larger diisopropylphenyl derivative yields exclusively the monomeric dimagnesiated phosphaalkene, while the mesityl derivative facilitates reductive coupling of two phosphaalkyne equivalents. Differences in reactivity were observed in coordinating solvents like THF, highlighting the importance of solvent effects on the reaction outcome. Contrary to reactions with (BuCP)-Bu-t, reactions with Me3SiCN resulted in 1,3-diazabutadienediyl complexes through reductive coupling and silyl migration processes.

Reductive Dimerization of CO by a Na/Mg(I) Diamide

Han-Ying Liu et al.

Summary: Sodium reduction of [{SiNDipp}Mg] leads to the formation of [{SiNDipp}MgNa](2), which features a long Mg-Mg bond enhanced by persistent Na-aryl interactions. The computational assessment suggests that this molecule should be considered as a contiguous tetrametallic core, supported by its reaction with CO to form ethynediolate mediated by dissimilar metal centers.

An electrochemical and computational chemistry study of substituted benzophenones

Emmie Chiyindiko et al.

Summary: This study presents an electrochemical and DFT analysis of the effect of substituents on the reduction potential of benzophenones, establishing a linear relationship between experimentally measured reduction potentials and DFT calculated LUMO energies. These relationships can predict the reduction potential of other substituted benzophenones, which is important in coordination chemistry where the electronic effects of molecules affect the reactivity of coordinated metals.

Carbonyl umpolung as an organometallic reagent surrogate

Xi-Jie Dai et al.

Summary: Construction of new carbon-carbon bonds is essential in organic chemistry, with organometallic reagents being versatile nucleophiles for this purpose. However, the classical organometallic reactions are limited by the dependence on stoichiometric quantities of metals and organic halides, leading to copious amounts of metal halide waste.
