An inherently kidney-targeting near-infrared fluorophore based probe for early detection of acute kidney injury

Fangqin Wang et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospital patients, and the lack of efficient early diagnosis leads to delayed treatment and high mortality. A near-infrared fluorophore with inherent kidney-targeting ability has been discovered, which can be used for non-intrusive interrogation of AKI-related biomarkers.

Real-Time Monitoring Renal Impairment Due to Drug-Induced AKI and Diabetes-Caused CKD Using an NAG-Activatable NIR-II Nanoprobe

Jiahui Tan et al.

Summary: A new fluorescent nanoprobe has been developed for real-time imaging of kidney function, providing high resolution imaging in living mice and showing potential for early diagnosis of renal diseases such as AKI and CKD. The nanoprobe is sensitive and specific for detecting AKI and CKD, allowing for noninvasive detection of disease onset at least 32 hours earlier than existing assays.

A Supramolecular Strategy to Engineering a Non-photobleaching and Near-Infrared Absorbing Nano-J-Aggregate for Efficient Photothermal Therapy

Meihui Su et al.

Summary: A supramolecular strategy was presented to build a water-stable, nonphotobleaching, and NIR-absorbing nano-PTA (J-NP) from J-aggregation of halogenated BODIPY dyes for efficient in vivo photothermal therapy. The remodeled J-NP significantly improved cellular uptake efficiency and exhibited efficient antitumor photothermal activities in vivo. This work not only establishes a supramolecular platform for high photothermal performance PTAs but also enables appealing optical functions derived from J-aggregation to be applied in vivo.

Photoacoustic molecular imaging-escorted adipose photodynamic-browning synergy for fighting obesity with virus-like complexes

Ronghe Chen et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy and adipose browning induction are two promising approaches to reverse obesity, with the former acting rapidly and locally, and the latter having a more gradual and widespread effect. Despite their complementarity, they have rarely been combined and imaged non-invasively in vivo.

Development of NIR-II Photoacoustic Probes Tailored for Deep-Tissue Sensing of Nitric Oxide

Melissa Y. Lucero et al.

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging using near infrared I light has limitations due to interference from endogenous biomolecules, prompting the development of NIR-II imaging agents for improved sensitivity. The study introduced APNO-1080 as a NIR-II nitric oxide-responsive probe, demonstrating enhanced sensitivity and deep-tissue imaging capabilities in vitro and in vivo models of cancer.

Thiophene donor for NIR-II fluorescence imaging-guided photothermal/photodynamic/chemo combination therapy

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: Organic fluorophores/photosensitizers have limited applications in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window due to low fluorescence quantum yields. A boron dipyrromethene (BDP) with high QYs and thiophene donor unit is created for single NIR laser-triggered phototherapeutic nanoparticles. These NPs exhibit high solubility, singlet oxygen QY, multifunctional characteristics, and high signal-to-background ratio in tumor-bearing mice.

L-carnitine suppresses cisplatin-induced renal injury in rats: impact on cytoskeleton proteins expression

Osama Fouad Ahmed Ebrahim et al.

Summary: LCAR has shown a curative effect on CDDP-induced kidney injury in rats by reversing renal structural and functional impairments, lowering serum urea and creatinine concentrations, restoring oxidant/antioxidant balance, reversing inflammation, and inhibiting caspase 3-mediated apoptotic cell death in renal tissues. Additionally, LCAR effectively down-regulates cytoskeleton proteins mRNA levels, reflecting amelioration of CDDP-induced podocyte injury.
