Combining crystal graphs and domain knowledge in machine learning to predict metal-organic frameworks performance in methane adsorption

Ruihan Wang et al.

Summary: A novel method based on the crystal graph convolutional neural network algorithm is proposed to efficiently predict the methane adsorption uptakes by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). By refining the force field parameters for methane specifically for the open metal site (OMS) MOFs, a more accurate dataset is constructed using a generic algorithm. The method utilizes the adsorption volume as embedding representations and allows for transfer learning. The results show high correlation coefficient and low mean average error for the newly developed algorithm, enabling fast prediction of methane adsorption volumes by MOFs. This method is believed to be an important tool in the early stages of high-throughput virtual screening for gas adsorption or separation in novel porous materials.
