Malian adults maintain serologic responses to virulent PfEMP1s amid seasonal patterns of fluctuation

Summary: Malian adults showed diverse serologic responses to PfEMP1 throughout the year, with decreased reactivity to a subset during the dry season and increased reactivity to a different subset during peak malaria transmission season, particularly for intracellular PfEMP1 domains. Some individuals demonstrated increased serologic responses to PfEMP1 after the dry season, indicating antigenic switching during asymptomatic infection. Adults were more likely to have variable serorecognition of CD36-binding PfEMP1s than non-CD36-binding PfEMP1s that bind EPCR or ICAM-1, which were consistently recognized throughout the year.
