Racial/Ethnic and Age Differences in the Direct and Indirect Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on US Mortality

Summary: This study estimated the direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on overall, race/ethnicity-specific, and age-specific mortality in the United States in 2020. The findings indicate that not only are there high mortality rates directly attributed to COVID-19, but there is also a significant proportion of mortality attributed to the indirect effects of the pandemic. Racial and ethnic minority groups experience a larger indirect impact, suggesting that the effects of the pandemic on mortality and health disparities are underestimated.
