Impact of agroecological management on plant diversity and soil-based ecosystem services in pasture and coffee systems in the Atlantic forest of Brazil

Heitor Mancini Teixeira et al.

Summary: The study found that agroecological management led to increased plant diversity, thus enhancing soil quality in pastures. Despite higher weeding intensity and more external inputs in large-scale and conventional coffee farming systems, they did not result in improved soil quality or coffee productivity compared to agroecological systems.

From ecosystems to socio-economic benefits: A systematic review of coastal ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea

Melanie J. Heckwolf et al.

Summary: The study provides a systematic synthesis of the knowledge on ecosystem services derived from seagrass, macroalgae, and mussels in the Baltic Sea. It highlights the most frequently reported ecosystem services, the pressures faced by coastal ecosystems, and the lack of knowledge on translating ecosystem services into socio-economic benefits. The research calls for a better analytical framework to directly link quantitative information about ecosystem service generation with human benefit.

Landscape Structure Is a Major Driver of Bee Functional Diversity in Crops

Jeferson G. E. Coutinho et al.

Summary: Land-use change negatively impacts pollinator communities, affecting pollination services. Studies at multiple spatial scales are needed to understand these relationships. Landscape heterogeneity and configuration play important roles in explaining bee functional diversity.

Bridging the gap between the agroecological ideal and its implementation into practice. A review

Antoinette M. Dumont et al.

Summary: The definition of "agroecology" is still controversial, with various interpretations and a lack of standardized methodologies for identifying and evaluating agroecological systems. The inconsistency in study and application restricts the recognition of benefits and drivers of different agroecological systems. Improved recognition of systems in transition and supportive policies are needed to scale up agroecology.

Principles of Sustainable Agriculture: Defining Standardized Reference Points

Ana Trigo et al.

Summary: There is no doubt about the necessity for a shift towards sustainable agriculture, with agriculture being a major contributor to environmental impacts. Through an inductive qualitative content analysis of various definitions and theories, four fundamental principles for sustainable agriculture were identified: integrated management, dynamic balance, regenerative design, and social development. To make our current agricultural systems more efficient and sustainable, better utilization of natural and human resources is crucial. This work provides guidelines for decision-making and methodology application in the context of sustainable agriculture.
