Integrating Screening and Treatment of Unhealthy Alcohol Use and Depression with Screening and Treatment of Anxiety, Pain, and Other Substance Use Among People with HIV and Other High-Risk Persons

Ellen C. Caniglia et al.

Summary: Screening for unhealthy alcohol use and depression can help identify comorbid symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, while treatment for unhealthy alcohol use and depression may improve comorbid pain interference and substance use. A comprehensive approach to screening and treatment can facilitate diagnostic assessment and treatment of these conditions, ultimately improving morbidity and mortality for patients.

Impact and correlates of sub-optimal social support among patients in HIV care

R. J. Fredericksen et al.

Summary: Social support (SS) is a significant predictor of health outcomes among patients living with HIV, with low SS being associated with poorer engagement in care, antiretroviral adherence, depression, anxiety, HIV stigma, and substance abuse. High SS, on the other hand, is linked to undetectable viral load. Assessment of SS levels can help identify patients at risk for negative health outcomes.

Polypharmacy and frailty among persons with HIV

Minhee Sung et al.

Summary: The study found that polypharmacy is associated with frailty in both HIV-infected and uninfected individuals, with frailty being less common in HIV-infected individuals. Each additional chronic non-ARV medication was associated with an 11% increased odds of having any frailty-related domain in HIV-infected individuals and a 4% increase in those uninfected. Further research is needed to explore the stronger association between polypharmacy and frailty in PLWH and potential medication deprescribing.
