Swarm satellite observations of the effect of prompt penetration electric fields (PPEFs) on plasma density around noon and midnight side of low latitudes during the 07-08 september 2017 geomagnetic storm

Erdinc Timoc

Summary: This paper discusses the influence of prompt penetration electric fields (PPEFs) on the distribution of plasma density at low latitudes during the geomagnetic storm on September 7-8, 2017, using plasma density data obtained from the Swarm satellite. The study reveals that the enhancement and reduction of plasma density are closely related to the magnetic local time (MLT), the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF Bz), and the main phase and the recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm.

Interplanetary Origins of Some Intense Geomagnetic Storms During Solar Cycle 24 and the Responses of African Equatorial/Low-Latitude Ionosphere to Them

O. A. Arowolo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interplanetary origins of eight intense geomagnetic storms during solar cycle 24, as well as the response of total electron content (TEC) at eight African equatorial/low-latitude stations to these storms. It was found that the TEC responses were generally negative, with ICME-driven storms causing pole-ward transport of plasma and CIR-driven storms showing negative ionospheric phases. The equatorial/low-latitude ionospheric responses were observed to be local time-dependent and influenced by the interplanetary drivers of the geomagnetic storms, with ICME-driven storms being more geoeffective than CIR-driven storms.

Responses of the African equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) to some selected intense geomagnetic storms during the maximum phase of solar cycle 24

O. J. Oyedokun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the morphology of GPS TEC responses in the African Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) region to intense geomagnetic storms during the ascending and maximum phases of solar cycle 24. The behavior of TEC during storms depends on the storm's commencement time and location, with significant impacts on TEC and EIA crest during the storm's main phase.

Summary: A series of X and M class flares and associated coronal mass ejections in early September 2017 caused significant perturbations in low-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics, leading to severe modifications of the equatorial electrojet and the appearance of equatorial plasma bubbles in the Indian region.

Storm induced ionospheric irregularities at the low/equatorial and mid-latitude regions over the Africa-Europe sector during the magnetic storm on March 6?8, 2016

Joseph Olwendo et al.

Summary: Using data from GNSS networks spanning the European-African sector, the study investigated ionospheric irregularities induced during the geomagnetic storm of 6?8 March 2016. Irregularities at mid-latitudes were attributed to the northern auroral convection electric field, while those at low latitudes were linked to the prompt penetration electric field.
