Financial transition and costs of sustainable agricultural intensification practices on a beef cattle and crop farm in Brazil's Amazon

Lorena Machado Pedrosa et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the economic benefits of transitioning a cooperating beef farm in Brazil's Amazon biome to a semi-intensive system using five sustainable agricultural intensification practices over three crop years. The adoption of these practices increased beef productivity and net farm income, proving that they can be effective in increasing profitability while reducing carbon footprint. Despite the challenges, farmer adoption of these practices can be improved through education, support, and incentives from both the public and private sectors.

Functionalization of polymers and nanomaterials for water treatment, food packaging, textile and biomedical applications: a review

Pooyan Makvandi et al.

Summary: The inert nature of most commercial polymers and nanomaterials limits their applications in various industrial fields, which can be solved by surface modifications to improve physicochemical and biological properties. Polymer functionalization allows for specific moieties and conjugate molecules to be grafted onto surfaces, enhancing material performances. Further research is needed on cell-polymer interactions, nanosafety, and industrial scale manufacturing to fully understand the advantages and challenges of polymer functionalization.

Counterion-insulated near-infrared dyes in biodegradable polymer nanoparticles for in vivo imaging

Joanna Sobska et al.

Summary: Polymeric nanoparticles loaded with near-infrared cyanine dyes using bulky fluorinated tetraphenylborate counterions demonstrated improved fluorescence quantum yields and reduced aggregation-caused quenching. By preparing PEGylated NPs, stealth properties were achieved, leading to enhanced in vivo imaging contrast and slower accumulation in the liver compared to bare PLGA NPs. Biodistribution studies revealed preferential accumulation in the liver, laying the foundation for further advancements in optical imaging for biomedical applications.
