Facile modification of hydroxyl group containing macromolecules provides autonomously self-healing polymers through the formation of dynamic Schiff base linkages

Tamas Takacs et al.

Summary: Self-healing polymers, as high-performance materials with autonomous healing ability, play a significant role in materials research. This study focuses on the synthesis and modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a model macromolecule with hydroxyl groups. The modified PVA samples containing both aldehyde and amino groups are capable of forming self-healing polymer through Schiff base reaction. The successful modification of PVA and the self-healing ability of the polymer without external stimulus are confirmed by various measurements. The synthesized polymer not only possesses the characteristics of pristine PVA but also exhibits advantageous mechanical properties that can be tuned by varying the degree of functionalization. This research presents a simple solution for functionalization of hydroxyl group containing polymers and demonstrates the potential applications in biomedicine and structural components.

Multilayered Curcumin-Loaded Hydrogel Microcarriers with Antimicrobial Function

Weronika Szczesna et al.

Summary: The study developed multilayered hydrogel microcarriers with multiple functionalities and successfully loaded them with chemotherapeutic curcumin (CUR). The surface of the microcarriers was coated with antimicrobial functionalized polyelectrolytes using the layer-by-layer technique. The functional layers exhibited good viscoelastic properties, and the release of the drug from the microcarriers followed a hybrid model. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the functionalized microcarriers against Staphylococcus aureus and Serratia marcescens was significantly enhanced.

Adsorption Properties of Soft Hydrophobically Functionalized PSS/MA Polyelectrolytes

Ewelina Jarek et al.

Summary: The adsorption properties of the hydrophobically functionalized polyelectrolyte were investigated at water/air and water/decane interfaces, as well as on the solid surface. It was found that surface activity was practically independent of the grafting ratio for C-16 side chains, while a lower grafting ratio seemed to increase surface activity for C-12 side chains. QCM-D and FTIR-ATR experiments confirmed the adsorption of the hydrophobized copolymer at PEM along with modification of water structure at the interface.
