4D Printable Tough and Thermoresponsive Hydrogels

Mutian Hua et al.

Summary: Hydrogels with stimuli-responsive volume changing abilities are being used in soft actuators and robots, but traditional tough hydrogels cannot satisfy both high toughness and high stimuli responsiveness. This study introduces a material design that combines responsive and tough components in a single hydrogel network, allowing for the synergistic realization of high toughness and actuation performance.

An on-demand plant-based actuator created using conformable electrodes

Wenlong Li et al.

Summary: The study introduces a biohybrid actuator using a plant and an electrical interface, which achieves efficient and responsive actuation and can be wirelessly controlled via a smartphone. This actuator with adaptive interface properties can perform more delicate tasks than its rigid counterparts, with response times tunable to 1.3 seconds and a power input of only 10(-5) W, capable of grasping thin wires and capturing moving objects.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels with Broad-Range Tunable Mechanical Properties via the Hofmeister Effect

Shuwang Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy to broadly and reversibly alter the mechanical properties of hydrogels by tuning the aggregation states of polymer chains based on the Hofmeister effect. An ultra-tough PVA hydrogel with exceptional mechanical properties is fabricated, showcasing continuous and reversible modulation of various mechanical properties over a large window. This strategy enables high mechanical performance and broad dynamic tunability, serving as a universal platform for applications ranging from biomedicine to wearable electronics.

Strong tough hydrogels via the synergy of freeze-casting and salting out

Mutian Hua et al.

Summary: A strategy combining freeze-casting and salting-out treatments produces poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with a multi-length-scale hierarchical architecture, including micrometre-scale honeycomb-like pore walls and interconnected nanofibril meshes. These hydrogels have properties that compare favorably to other tough hydrogels and even natural tendons.

Direct Printing of Micropatterned Plasmonic Substrates of Size-Controlled Gold Nanoparticles by Precision Photoreduction

Yangxi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for direct printing of size-controlled gold nanoparticles for applications in plasmonic substrates and microsensor development. Using light-controlled and photocatalytic reduction technology, micrometer-scale patterns are created on a titanium dioxide layer, introducing a Fano resonance to sharpen spectral width of localized surface plasmon resonance peak. This printing technology offers new opportunities for developing miniature plasmonic devices.
