Propylene and butylene glycol: new alternatives to ethylene glycol in conjugated polymers for bioelectronic applications

Maximilian Moser et al.

Summary: A series of polymers based on a bithiophene-thienothiophene conjugated backbone was synthesized, with the conventional EG chains substituted by propylene and butylene counterparts. The use of propylene and butylene chains led to polymers with a more hydrophobic character, reducing excessive water uptake during OECT operation and significantly boosting electronic charge carrier mobility. Despite lower water uptake, the newly developed oligoether chains retained sufficient hydrophilicity for bulk volumetric doping, resulting in polymers with superior OECT performance.

Donor Functionalization Tuning the N-Type Performance of Donor-Acceptor Copolymers for Aqueous-Based Electrochemical Devices

Shengyu Cong et al.

Summary: In this study, three n-type donor-acceptor copolymers were synthesized by coupling glycolated naphthalene tetracarboxylicdiimide (gNDI) with different donating companion moieties. The strength of the donor units was systematically varied by functionalizing with different thiophene derivatives. The copolymers exhibited improved redox stability and electron mobility when the donating strength of donor units was weakened. The gNDI-FBT copolymer showed the highest charge-storage capacity, electrochromism contrast, and performance in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) among the three copolymers.

Summary: Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are widely used in low power circuits, biosensors, and neuromorphic computing. However, the choice of high-performance n-type polymers for OECTs is limited. This study reports on three non-fused, planar polymer materials with increasing polar side chains, which improve the OECT performance. The research demonstrates that the performance of OECTs increases with the number of polar side chains, resulting in higher hydrophilicity and electron affinities.
