The complex association between social media use intensity and adolescent wellbeing: A longitudinal investigation of five factors that may affect the association

Maartje Boer et al.

Summary: This study found that within individuals, changes in different types of social media use activities were not significantly associated with changes in life satisfaction, while there were associations ranging from negative to positive across individuals. The higher the intensity of certain social media use activities at the between-person level, the lower the average level of life satisfaction among adolescents, but these associations were confounded by SMU problems.

Problematic social media use and social support received in real-life versus on social media: Associations with depression, anxiety and social isolation

Dar Meshi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that problematic social media use is associated with decreased real-life social support and increased social support on social media. Real-life social support is then linked to reduced depression, anxiety, and social isolation, while social support on social media is not associated with these mental health measures. The findings highlight the importance of real-life social support in buffering the negative impacts of problematic social media use on mental health.
