Changes in Cigarette Smoking and Vaping in Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the UK: Findings from Baseline and 12-Month Follow up of HEBECO Study

Summary: This study investigated changes in cigarette smoking and vaping among UK adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and factors associated with these changes. The findings showed that COVID-19 stimulated more interest in reducing or quitting cigarette smoking than vaping among the survey participants. Participants self-reported data on sociodemographics, COVID-19-related factors, and smoking/vaping characteristics over 12 months, and the study highlighted that motivation to quit smoking and being younger were associated with making a smoking quit attempt and smoking cessation.

Inequalities in Smoking and Quitting-Related Outcomes Among Adults With and Without Children in the Household 2013-2019: A Population Survey in England

Summary: This study found that in the most disadvantaged social grade in England, smoking prevalence was higher among those with children in the household. In contrast, in all other social grades, there was lower smoking prevalence among those with children. Therefore, it is important to provide support and address barriers to quitting smoking among these groups.

Summary: This study found that current smokers and long-term ex-smokers in England appear to have higher odds of self-reported COVID-19 compared to never smokers. However, there were no significant differences between users of nicotine replacement therapy or e-cigarettes. The engagement in hand-washing behaviors was high regardless of nicotine or tobacco use.

Association of the COVID-19 lockdown with smoking, drinking and attempts to quit in England: an analysis of 2019-20 data

Summary: Following the March 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, smokers and high-risk drinkers in England were more likely than before lockdown to report trying to quit smoking or reduce alcohol consumption. Rates of smoking cessation and use of remote cessation support were higher post-lockdown, while high-risk drinking prevalence increased and use of evidence-based support for alcohol reduction decreased without a compensatory increase in remote support.

Summary: Current smokers had a higher prevalence of self-reported confirmed COVID-19 infection, especially among those without post-16 qualifications. Smokers reported higher worries about COVID-19, but lower adherence to protective guidelines compared to non-smokers.

How a sample of English stop smoking services and vape shops adapted during the early COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-methods cross-sectional survey

Summary: The study found that smoking cessation services were able to adjust during the period, such as offering remote services. A significant percentage (74.6%) of vape shops had to close and were unable to make changes; 71.2% reported declining business. The qualitative data for both vape shops and smoking cessation services revealed practical challenges in adapting, as well as new pathways for support and collaboration.

Smokers' cognitive and behavioural reactions during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from the 2020 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey

Summary: This study found that although nearly half of smokers considered quitting smoking because of COVID-19, the majority did not change their smoking behavior. Smokers were more likely to try quitting or reducing smoking if they were more concerned about the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 related to smoking. Smokers in Australia were the least likely to reduce or attempt to quit smoking, possibly due to the significantly lower impact of COVID-19 during the early phase of the pandemic in that country.
