Systemic hormonal contraception and risk of venous thromboembolism

Oskari Heikinheimo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the associations between the patterns of use of different hormonal contraceptives and the risk of venous thromboembolism. The results showed that ethinylestradiol-containing combined preparations were associated with increased risk, while estradiol-containing combined preparations only had a slightly increased risk, and progestin-only contraception was not associated with venous thromboembolism risk.

Estradiol Valerate Vs. Ethinylestradiol In Combined Oral Contraceptives: Effects On The Pituitary-Ovarian Axis

Annina Haverinen et al.

Summary: Limited studies have compared the effects of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) containing natural estrogens and synthetic ethinylestradiol (EE) on reproductive hormones. This study compared the effects of estradiol valerate (EV)+dienogest (DNG), EE+DNG, and DNG alone (active control) on levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone, Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), ovarian steroids, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and the Free Androgen Index (FAI). The results suggest that treatment with EV+DNG may have more beneficial health effects compared to EE+DNG.

Ethinyl estradiol vs estradiol valerate in combined oral contraceptives - Effect on glucose tolerance: A randomized, controlled clinical trial

Annina Haverinen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two formulations of combined oral contraceptives and DNG-only on glucose tolerance in healthy, young, normal-weight women. The results showed no clinically significant differences in glucose metabolism between the COC groups, suggesting that these preparations have a neutral impact on glucose tolerance after continuous use for nine weeks.

Prospective controlled cohort study on the safety of a monophasic oral contraceptive containing nomegestrol acetate (2.5mg) and 17β-oestradiol (1.5mg) (PRO-E2 study): risk of venous and arterial thromboembolism

Suzanne Reed et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess and compare the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and arterial thromboembolism (ATE) in NOMAC-E2 users with levonorgestrel-containing combined oral contraceptive (COCLNG) users. The results showed that NOMAC-E2 use was not associated with a higher risk of VTE or ATE compared with COCLNG.
