Strategies for damage tolerance enhancement in metal/ceramic thin films: Lessons learned from Ti/TiN

Ashwini Kumar Mishra et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of multilayering to enhance the damage tolerance of brittle ceramics like Titanium Nitride (TiN) in nanostructured, thin film form. By modifying the crack driving force through elastic-plastic mismatch, the fracture toughness of Ti/TiN multilayers is increased compared to single layer TiN, while maintaining comparable hardness. The results provide design parameters for multilayering in metal/ceramic thin film systems.

Anisotropic super-hardness of hexagonal WB2±z thin films

C. Fuger et al.

Summary: Transition metal diboride-based thin films, with unique properties, are potential alternatives to current protective and functional coatings. This study focuses on hexagonal WB2-z, where the AlB2 structure is stabilized by sub-stoichiometric WB1.5 due to B vacancies. Experimental results show that alpha-WB2-z coatings exhibit super-hardness with anisotropy, and the mechanical properties can be tuned by crystallographic orientation relations.

Investigation for oxidation mechanism of CrN: A combination of DFT and ab initio molecular dynamics study

Qingxin Kang et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) were used to investigate the CrN oxidation mechanism. The results show that the (100) surface has the lowest surface energy, stable adsorption sites for oxygen molecules and atoms, and the formation of CreO bonds between O-p and Cr-d orbitals.

High-throughput first-principles search for ceramic superlattices with improved ductility and fracture resistance

Nikola Koutna et al.

Summary: The study employs high-throughput density functional theory calculations to develop design guidelines for nanolaminates combining cubic transition metal nitride and/or carbide ceramics, identifying several top candidates for novel superlattice films. Key factors promoting interface-induced enhancement of hardness and/or fracture toughness include lattice parameter and shear modulus mismatch of the layer components.

Mechanical properties of single and polycrystalline α-Al2O3 coatings grown by chemical vapor deposition

Fabian Konstantiniuk et al.

Summary: This study synthesized alpha-Al2O3 coatings with different orientations using chemical vapor deposition on sapphire and cemented carbide substrates, and investigated their mechanical properties. The (0001) oriented alpha-Al2O3 single crystalline coating exhibited higher hardness and Young's modulus, while the (11-20) oriented coating showed the highest fracture stress and fracture toughness. Compared to the single crystalline coatings, the state of the art (0001) textured polycrystalline coating had lower values for hardness, Young's modulus, fracture stress, and fracture toughness.

Summary: The bias voltage has a significant influence on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of CrTaN coatings. Increasing the bias voltage enhances the hardness, Young's modulus, and fracture toughness of the coatings, but decreases the thermal stability.
