Crack-resistant σ/FCC interfaces in the Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy with the dispersed σ-phase

Donggyun You et al.

Summary: The morphology and size of the a-phase in Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 non-equiatomic high entropy alloy play a significant role in its mechanical properties. Fine sigma-precipitates can increase strength without severe ductility loss, while coarsened sigma-phase leads to early failure. Controlling the size and dispersion of the sigma-phase to increase sigma/FCC interfaces is essential for developing HEAs with an excellent strength-ductility combination and damage tolerance.

Hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) plasticity induces simultaneous increase in both yield strength and ductility in a Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 high-entropy alloy

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: The strategy of hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) plasticity is applied to enhance both yield strength and ductility in Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA, resulting in an increase from 200MPa to 760MPa in yield strength and from 35% to 38% in ductility. The presence of hysteresis loop during each unload-reload cycle in tensile testing suggests the effect of HDI plasticity in enhancing strength and ductility. Hetero-structuring is found to increase HDI stress in HS, facilitating both HDI strengthening and HDI strain hardening to play a crucial role in improving mechanical properties.

Awakening the metastability of an interstitial high entropy alloy via severe deformation

Shuya Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the metastability of a non-equiatomic FeMnCoCr high-entropy alloy was shown to be dormant when co-doped with C and N interstitials, disappearing during tensile deformation but re-emerging after severe deformation via cold-rolling. The generation of epsilon-phase lamellae was found to be driven by strain localization, intensifying local elastic fields to overcome the energy barrier of epsilon-martensite transformation. These findings suggest that phase metastability can be controlled by adjusting the strain state during alloy processing.

Enhanced cryogenic tensile properties with multi-stage strain hardening through partial recrystallization in a ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Jae Wung Bae et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the formation of partially recrystallized bimodal microstructures in the Fe60Co15Ni15Cr10 (at%) ferrous medium-entropy alloy through a single-step heat treatment after cold-rolling. This process enhances the yield-strength and ultimate-tensile-strength of the alloy while maintaining a persistent ductility of 61%, thus avoiding the strength-ductility trade-off. The retention of deformation substructures allows for a significant increase in yield-strength compared to a fully-recrystallized state.

Interactions between Dislocations and Boundaries during Deformation

Hongjiang Pan et al.

Summary: In this paper, the interactions between dislocations and boundaries during deformation at ambient temperatures are reviewed, with a focus on interaction behaviors, boundary resistances and energies, transmission mechanisms, grain size effects, and other primary influencing factors. The structure of boundaries and interactions between dislocations and boundaries in metals with different grain sizes are summarized, and the advantages and drawbacks of in-situ techniques are briefly discussed based on experimental and simulation results. The latest studies and fundamental concepts are presented in the hope that this paper can serve as a reference for the interactions between dislocations and boundaries during deformation.

Hierarchical grain size and nanotwin gradient microstructure for improved mechanical properties of a non-equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Zibing An et al.

Summary: This study investigated a multi-mechanism approach to enhancing the mechanical properties of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy through non-equiatomic alloy design and processing. The alloy exhibited improved yield strength, tensile strength, and uniform elongation, as well as significantly increased toughness after rotationally accelerated shot peening treatment. The enhancement in strength was attributed to various strengthening mechanisms associated with the heterogeneous microstructure of the alloy. The occurrence of multiple deformation mechanisms contributed to achieving suitable strain hardening and ensuring steady plastic deformation for high toughness.

Summary: A Ni2CoCrFeTi0.24Al0.2 HEA was developed with a yield strength of approximately 1.3 GPa and tensile elongation of 20% through single-step heat treatment. The excellent strength-ductility combination is attributed to the grain scale heterogeneous structure with L1(2) precipitates ranging from 10 to 100 nm.
