Tuning the ceria interfaces inside the dual phase oxygen transport membranes

Ke Ran et al.

Summary: Dual-phase oxygen transport membranes (DP-OTMs) provide a good alternative for oxygen separation, with the performance of CGO-FCO composite dominated by CGO grain boundaries. However, the atomistic environment of the boundaries remains largely unknown, limiting the optimization of membrane performance. Using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques, researchers quantified the atomic and chemical structures of CGO boundaries in CGO-FCO membranes, providing insights for optimized membrane processing.

Optimization of sintering conditions for improved microstructural and mechanical properties of dense Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-delta-FeCo2O4 oxygen transport membranes

Fanlin Zeng et al.

Summary: After studying the phase interactions among the initial powder mixtures, sintering at approximately 1050 degrees C was found to accelerate the densification process. Increasing the sintering temperature to 1200 degrees C further homogenized the pore distribution, resulting in enhanced mechanical strength. Sintering at 1200 degrees C was determined to be the optimal temperature, achieving a high microstructure density and improved mechanical properties.

Residual stress and mechanical strength of Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ-FeCo2O4 dual phase oxygen transport membranes

Fanlin Zeng et al.

Summary: Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ-FeCo2O4 membranes have broad application potential in oxygen-consuming industrial processes due to excellent chemical stability, but sufficient mechanical strength is needed for long-term reliable operation. The study reveals that mechanical strengths of the membranes increase with decreasing iron cobalt spinel content, while high iron cobalt spinel content induces microcracks and high residual tensile stress. It is suggested to limit the iron cobalt spinel content to eliminate residual tensile stress while maintaining high mechanical strength.
