Short-range order localizing diffusion in multi-principal element alloys

Bin Xing et al.

Summary: The impact of chemical short-range order (SRO) on diffusion in multi-principal elements alloys is computationally studied and theoretically analyzed. It is found that the presence of SRO considerably reduces and localizes vacancy-mediated diffusion, which is induced by an increase of migration barrier and enhanced diffusion correlation. The results imply that controlling the ordering in chemistry can potentially manipulate diffusional behaviors in multi-principal elements alloys.

Cross-kink unpinning controls the medium- to high-temperature strength of body-centered cubic NbTiZr medium-entropy alloy

Rajeshwar R. Eleti et al.

Summary: The deformation mechanisms of a NbTiZr body-centered cubic (BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA) were investigated by tensile testing at different temperatures. It was found that the alloy deformation is controlled by screw-dislocation slip, with cross-kinks/jogs observed frequently at most temperatures. At higher temperatures, the dominance of cross-kink strengthening leads to a temperature insensitive yield strength, while the disappearance of cross-kinks/edge dipoles above 1073 K results in a strength drop.

Theory of solid solution strengthening of BCC Chemically Complex Alloys

S. I. Rao et al.

Summary: An analytic model for substitutional solid solution strengthening in BCC CCAs based on a/2<111> screw dislocation mobility is developed and presented. Different strengthening mechanisms are observed at different temperatures, requiring modifications to existing models to apply to refractory CCAs.

Direct observation of chemical short-range order in a medium-entropy alloy

Xuefei Chen et al.

Summary: The study provides direct experimental evidence of chemical short-range atomic-scale ordering (CSRO) in a VCoNi medium-entropy alloy through diffraction and electron microscopy analysis. The research demonstrates that using specific crystallographic directions can reveal CSRO in face-centred-cubic VCoNi concentrated solution, offering insights into atomic packing configuration and dislocation interactions enhanced by CSROs.

Chemical short range order strengthening in BCC complex concentrated alloys

E. Antillon et al.

Summary: Atomistic methods were used to anneal two BCC chemically complex alloys to evaluate the effect of chemical short-range order on alloy strength. It was found that annealing led to a softening of the BCC quaternary alloy but had minimal effect on solid solution strengthening in the ternary alloy. Results were modeled using an extension of the Suzuki model of substitutional solid solution strengthening, with good agreement between the model results and direct atomistic simulation data.

Theory of kink migration in dilute BCC alloys

Alireza Ghafarollahi et al.

Summary: Plastic deformation in BCC metals and dilute alloys is controlled by kink pair nucleation and migration processes along screw dislocations. An analytical statistical model for stress-dependent kink migration barrier in dilute alloys is developed and validated, providing a unified understanding of screw dislocation strength in BCC alloys. The model includes the transition from nucleation dominance to migration dominance, with good agreement with experiments over a range of concentrations and temperatures.

Predicting core structure variations and spontaneous partial kink formation for 1/2 <111> screw dislocations in three BCC NbTiZr alloys

Summary: Recent studies have shown that chemically-complex solid-solution alloys produce equilibrium dislocations at high temperatures, leading to kinks and pinning points that significantly increase strength. Atomistic studies and chemical analysis can help understand the effects of different alloy compositions on dislocation formation.

High energy barriers for edge dislocation motion in body-centered cubic high entropy alloys

R. E. Kubilay et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that edge dislocations in high-entropy alloys have high barriers for motion, leading to high strengths at elevated temperatures. Computational studies on two model alloys show agreement with theoretical predictions, validating the analytic theory for guiding alloy selection based on edge motion properties. Additionally, a reduced analytic model based on solute misfit volumes explains significant strength increases in certain alloy compositions, further supporting the effectiveness of the analytic theory in understanding alloy behavior.
