Saphenous vein harvesting techniques for coronary artery bypass grafting: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Nguyen Lam Vuong et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of different harvesting techniques for the great saphenous vein (GSV) in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The results showed that endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) techniques were the most favorable in terms of safety and long-term efficacy. EVH significantly reduced the risk of wound infection, sensibility disorder, and postoperative pain compared to other techniques. However, there were no significant differences in long-term outcomes such as mortality, myocardial infarction, and graft patency. No-touch technique was also recommended when using an open technique.

Tissue engineered vascular grafts transform into autologous neovessels capable of native function and growth

Kevin M. Blum et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) into functional blood vessels. The researchers found that TEVGs undergo two phases of changes after implantation: an early phase driven by inflammation, and a later phase driven by the mechanical properties of the tissue. The resulting blood vessels demonstrated similar growth and response to blood flow as the body's own blood vessels. These findings have implications for the future clinical use of TEVGs.

A pilot study on biaxial mechanical, collagen microstructural, and morphological characterizations of a resected human intracranial aneurysm tissue

Devin W. Laurence et al.

Summary: This pilot study comprehensively quantified the mechanical, collagen fiber microstructural, and morphological properties of a resected human posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysm. Mechanical testing showed the tissue to exhibit hysteresis, a nonlinear stress-strain response, and material anisotropy. Collagen fiber architecture was mainly aligned with the testing Y-direction, and histological analysis revealed significant damage to the tissue's morphological integrity.

Effects of enzyme-based removal of collagen and elastin constituents on the biaxial mechanical responses of porcine atrioventricular heart valve anterior leaflets

Colton J. Ross et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the relationship between microstructure and mechanics of the AHV leaflet, with findings showing that removal of elastin or collagen has distinct effects on tissue extensibility and stress relaxation. These insights could be valuable for future refinements of constitutive models describing the essential microstructure-mechanics relationship.

The mechanical characterization of blood vessels and their substitutes in the continuous quest for physiological-relevant performances. A critical review

D. B. Camasao et al.

Summary: This article discusses the mechanical characteristics of vascular substitutes and their impact on blood flow, highlighting the differences in testing methods and data analysis found in the literature. It also suggests using different testing methods at different stages of vascular substitute development, while emphasizing the importance of following ISO standards whenever possible.
