Interleukin-8 Predicts Fatigue at 12 Months Post-Injury in Children with Traumatic Brain Injury

Alison Crichton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether persisting fatigue in children with traumatic brain injury could be predicted by serum biomarker concentrations, particularly IL-8. The results showed that IL-8 was the best serum biomarker for estimating the likelihood of children experiencing fatigue at 12 months post-injury, and significantly improved predictive models of fatigue based on severity.

Interleukin-4 improves white matter integrity and functional recovery after murine traumatic brain injury via oligodendroglial PPARγ

Hongjian Pu et al.

Summary: IL-4 has been found to promote white matter integrity restoration and play a positive role in neurological recovery after TBI. However, IL-4 treatment did not reduce macroscopic brain lesions, but instead preserved white matter structure and function mainly through oligodendrogenesis.

Early versus Late Profiles of Inflammatory Cytokines after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Their Association with Neuropsychological Outcomes

Aditya Vedantam et al.

Summary: This study explores the profile of plasma inflammatory cytokines in mTBI patients and their associations with neuropsychological outcomes. The results suggest that plasma cytokine levels post-injury are significantly associated with early and late post-concussive symptoms, PTSD, and depression scores after mTBI, highlighting the potential role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of post-traumatic symptoms.

AMPK induces regulatory innate lymphoid cells after traumatic brain injury

Babak Baban et al.

Summary: The study shows increased proliferation of ILCs within the meninges after acute brain injury, with higher levels in TBI patients. AMPK plays a role in inhibiting ILC expansion, while IL-33 administration activates AMPK and suppresses specific ILC types.

M-CSF, IL-6, and TGF-β promote generation of a new subset of tissue repair macrophage for traumatic brain injury recovery

Zhiqi Li et al.

Summary: TBI can lead to high mortality rate, and patients with better outcomes have higher concentrations of M6T. Treatment with M6T can accelerate tissue repair and improve neurological function, offering a potential therapeutic strategy for TBI.

Summary: IL-33, acting through its receptor complex involving ST2 and IL-1RAP, plays crucial roles in the CNS and is implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Understanding the functional roles and cellular signaling mechanisms of IL-33 in the CNS may lead to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The Peripheral Immune System and Traumatic Brain Injury: Insight into the role of T-helper cells

Wangxiao Bao et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that immune-inflammatory processes play a key role in the physiopathological events associated with traumatic brain injury. TBI triggers T-cell-specific immunological changes involving different subsets of T-helper cells and cytokines, which can have contrasting effects on disease progression. Efforts are ongoing to identify specific T-helper cells and cytokine profiles associated with prognosis, which may serve as effective treatment targets to improve the management of TBI patients.
