Engineering a passivating electric double layer for high performance lithium metal batteries

Weili Zhang et al.

Summary: The authors developed a new strategy to achieve fast-charging and low-temperature high voltage lithium metal batteries by engineering a passivating electric double layer (EDL) structure. The unconventional EDL structure significantly suppresses the anodic decomposition of the electrolyte and improves electrochemical performances of the device.

Promoting Mechanistic Understanding of Lithium Deposition and Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Formation Using Advanced Characterization and Simulation Methods: Recent Progress, Limitations, and Future Perspectives

Yaolin Xu et al.

Summary: In recent years, research on Li metal anodes as an alternative to graphite anodes in Li-ion batteries has gained significant attention due to its potential in boosting the energy density of lithium batteries. However, the practical use of Li metal anodes has been hindered by issues of unstable Li deposition and poor cyclability. This article discusses recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of Li deposition/dissolution and solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) formation through advanced characterization techniques and simulation methods. The limitations and open questions in these processes are also addressed, along with perspectives on future research and potential methods for obtaining new insights.

Spontaneously formation of SEI layers on lithium metal from LiFSI/DME and LiTFSI/DME electrolytes

Haitao Zhang et al.

Summary: The spontaneous formation of solid electrolyte interphase (s-SEI) on the surface of lithium metal was reported in this study. Differences in the properties of the s-SEI layers formed in different electrolytes were investigated, showing that the composition mainly consisted of LiF, Li3N, ROCO2Li, and ROLi. Thicker s-SEI layers were found to increase the polarization potential of plating/stripping, while Li3N-riched s-SEI reduced the polarization potential.

Potentiometric Measurement to Probe Solvation Energy and Its Correlation to Lithium Battery Cyclability

Sang Cheol Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a potentiometric technique was introduced to quantitatively characterize the impact of Li+ solvation energy in battery electrolytes on performance, revealing a correlation between cell potential and cycling stability. We found that solvents weakly binding to Li+ lead to improved cycling stability, as weaker solvation results in an anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase that stabilizes cycling. This potentiometric measurement provides a guide for engineering effective electrolytes for lithium metal anodes.

High-voltage liquid electrolytes for Li batteries: progress and perspectives

Xiulin Fan et al.

Summary: The energy density of LIBs has been increased threefold since their introduction, but the capacity of transition metal oxide cathodes is approaching its limit due to stability limitations of electrolytes. To further enhance energy density, new high-capacity and high-voltage cathode materials need to be explored, and graphite anodes may need to be replaced. One of the main challenges for future development is the development of new electrolyte compositions that can accommodate high-voltage cathodes and anodes while ensuring the stability of the batteries.
