Whole-Voltage-Range Oxygen Redox in P2-Layered Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Xun-Lu Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates reversible oxygen-redox in a wide voltage range of 1.5-4.5 V in layered metal-oxide cathodes, attributing the stability to Mg-ions as pillars in the Na layer and the triggering of oxygen-redox to intrinsic vacancies in the TM layer. Charge compensation from Mn- and O-ions contributes to the whole voltage range, while Fe-ions only contribute to the high-voltage region. The reversible oxygen-redox is achieved by orphaned electrons in O's nonbonding 2p orbitals pointing toward TM-vacancy sites, while Mg-ions in Na sites effectively suppress oxygen release.

Unraveling gas evolution in sodium batteries by online electrochemical mass spectrometry

Leiting Zhang et al.

Summary: Identification of gaseous decomposition products from irreversible side-reactions helps understand the inner workings of rechargeable batteries. This study focused on gas evolution processes in Na-ion batteries through online electrochemical mass spectrometry, revealing differences in SEI stability and electrolyte reduction between Na-ion and Li-ion systems. The findings provide insights for developing more durable electrode-electrolyte interphases for higher specific energy and improved cycling stability in Na-ion batteries.

Stabilizing Transition Metal Vacancy Induced Oxygen Redox by Co2+/Co3+ Redox and Sodium-Site Doping for Layered Cathode Materials

Xun-Lu Li et al.

Summary: Anionic redox can boost the energy density of metal-oxide cathodes, but TMO6 subunits are inherently rigid and may not tolerate inner strains induced by lattice glide. A designed material with vacancies in TM sites and Mg ions improves flexibility and stability, maintaining a long voltage plateau at 4.2 V during deep desodiation. The strategy paves the way for highly stable cathode materials with reversible anionic redox for sodium-ion batteries.
