A Modular Composite Device of Poly(Ethylene Oxide)/Poly(Butylene Terephthalate) (PEOT/PBT) Nanofibers and Gelatin as a Dual Drug Delivery System for Local Therapy of Soft Tissue Tumors

Anna Liguori et al.

Summary: This study presents a composite hydrogel-electrospun nanofiber scaffold for the local therapy and post-surgical treatment of solid soft tumors. The scaffold showed modulate architecture and controlled release kinetics for two pharmaceutics. In vitro analyses confirmed the non-toxicity of the scaffold and demonstrated its role in tissue repair. Furthermore, in silico analysis supported the negative prognostic role of IL-10 in solid tumors.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition and the cytoskeleton in bioengineered systems

Susan E. Leggett et al.

Summary: The process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is intricately linked to alterations in the intracellular cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix, leading to cellular elongation and polarity changes. Recent bioengineering approaches have shed light on the mechanisms behind EMT and cytoskeletal dynamics, with a focus on multicellular behavior, vimentin function, and contact guidance patterning. These technologies allow for a deeper understanding of EMT at the single cell level and offer insights into its implications for cancer progression.

Reduced Lamin A/C Does Not Facilitate Cancer Cell Transendothelial Migration but Compromises Lung Metastasis

Francesco Roncato et al.

Summary: Research indicates that reduced levels of A-type lamins in highly metastatic cancer cells do not increase their ability to pass through endothelial barriers and lung vessels, but may instead compromise lung metastasis at a later stage.
