A Transcriptomic Approach to the Recruitment of Venom Proteins in a Marine Annelid

Ana P. Rodrigo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Polychaeta Eulalia sp. secretes toxins that affect the neuromuscular activity of prey, with some toxins phylogenetically related to Polychaeta, Mollusca or more ancient groups. The recruitment of gene products for venom systems evolution is complex and does not follow expected eumetazoan tree-of-life.
