Compact actively Q-switched laser for sensing applications

Summary: A novel approach utilizing a deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal cell for active Q-switching in an integrated waveguide chip laser is presented. The device can be directly integrated onto the Ytterbium-doped waveguide chip and controlled by an electrical signal. Experimental results show Q-switched lasers can be triggered with pulse durations as short as 38 ns and a maximum slope efficiency of 22% at repetition rates ranging from 0.1 kHz to 20 kHz.
