Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Investigation of Changes in Saliva in Radiotherapy-Induced Head Neck Cancer Patients

Christina Winter et al.

Summary: The study found that the physiological and chemical properties of saliva in patients undergoing radiation therapy changed significantly, including a shift in pH to acidity, an increase in osmolality, and alterations in viscoelastic properties. By using a hyaluronic acid formulation, similar adhesion characteristics to healthy saliva could be achieved.

The Relationship Between Salivary Redox, Diet, and Food Flavor Perception

Mathieu Schwartz et al.

Summary: The mouth is the gateway for food and microorganisms to enter the organism, where saliva plays a crucial role in protection. Food can contain antioxidant compounds that affect the antioxidant capacity of saliva, subsequently impacting flavor perception.

A brief, highly selective history of acute phase proteins as indicators of infection, inflammation and injury

Michael C. Powanda et al.

Summary: The study suggests that an array of plasma protein alterations occurs in various species in response to trauma, inflammation, and infections, regardless of the etiologic agent. These plasma proteins are part of the innate immune response and may be predictive of morbidity and mortality. Selected acute phase proteins should be included in future studies to improve understanding of disease progression in chronic and acute conditions. Additionally, the relationship between vaccine-induced inflammation and protection from different types of vaccines should be further assessed.
