Deceased Organ Transplantation in Bangladesh: The Dynamics of Bioethics, Religion and Culture

Summary: Organ transplantation from living related donors has been implemented in Bangladesh since 1982, with cornea transplantation from posthumous donors starting in 1984. However, apart from corneal donations, transplantation of vital organs from deceased donors has not been widely adopted in Bangladesh. Cultural attitudes, religious beliefs, and unclear regulations are major factors hindering posthumous organ donation for transplantation in Bangladesh.

The Human Organ Transplantation Act in Bangladesh: Towards Proper Family-Based Ethics and Law

Summary: The Human Organ Transplantation Act of Bangladesh allows organ donations from both living and brain-dead donors. The Act was amended in 2018 to expand the pool of living donors and prioritize family members in receiving organs after death. The introduction of incentives for organ donation raises ethical dilemmas, especially concerning the financial compensation for distant relative donors and the allocation of organs based on a living donor incentive system.
