Visual assay of Escherichia coli O157:H7 based on an isothermal strand displacement and hybrid chain reaction amplification strategy

Xiu Liu et al.

Summary: A simple, sensitive, and enzyme-free method for visual point-of-care detection of 16S rRNA of Escherichia coli O157:H7 has been developed based on an isothermal strand displacement-hybrid chain reaction (ISD-HCR) and lateral flow strip (LFS). This approach allows for detection of E. coli O157:H7 at concentrations as low as 10(2) CFU mL(-1) without the need for instrumentation, providing a valuable tool for point-of-care detection of pathogenic bacteria in resource-limited countries.

Quantifying Hypochlorous Acid Concentration in Environmental Water Using Smartphone Colorimetry

Shuai He et al.

Summary: This study presents an effective method for detecting hypochlorite acid using the BPY1 probe, which changes solution color through selective oxidation by HClO. The UV-vis spectra and test paper observation can be used to detect HClO concentration, with a detection limit of 0.5 μM and 5 μM respectively. By using smartphone colorimetry, HClO detection showed a good recovery rate, making it a simple and practical method for monitoring HClO in water, especially in developing countries.
