Housing-related delayed discharge from inpatient mental health units: Magnitude and contributors in a metropolitan mental health service

Jenny Nguyen et al.

Summary: International research has shown that delayed discharges from inpatient mental health units are common due to lack of suitable housing for patients, with little known about the issue in an Australian setting. Findings from a study in New South Wales highlighted that lack of housing options, services, funding difficulties, and unclear pathways were major contributors to the problem, costing the health system $4,054,149 in 2018 and potentially $269.5 million per year nationally. Urgent need for additional housing and a whole of government approach was emphasized to address this significant issue.
