Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19): a review of current evidence

Esmaeil Mehraeen et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a significant increase in olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions during the COVID-19 epidemic. Most studies (95.8%) have confirmed symptoms of anosmia in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, along with evidence of ageusia and dysgeusia in patients with COVID-19. The findings support reports that SARS-CoV-2 may infect oral and nasal tissues, leading to olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions.

Diverse Immunological Factors Influencing Pathogenesis in Patients with COVID-19: A Review on Viral Dissemination, Immunotherapeutic Options to Counter Cytokine Storm and Inflammatory Responses

Ali A. Rabaan et al.

Summary: The pathogenesis of COVID-19 is still not fully understood, with recent research primarily focusing on the immunopathology of the disease. A healthy immune system responds promptly to the virus, while an impaired immune system leads to unregulated immune responses and systemic damage. Therapeutic strategies are being explored to mitigate the cytokine storm and organ damage in severe COVID-19 cases.
