Combining night time lights in prediction of poverty incidence at the county level

Jianbin Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates an accurate and reliable method for identifying poverty areas and predicting poverty incidence using night time light remote sensing data and machine learning methods, achieving an identification accuracy of 76.5% and a predictive accuracy of 0.95 when verifying the model. The combination of poverty mapping with night time lights and machine learning shows potential to provide decision-making basis for sustainable development in poverty-stricken areas.

The Externalities of Corruption: Evidence from Entrepreneurial Firms in China

Mariassunta Giannetti et al.

Summary: Utilizing China's anti-corruption campaign, it was found that firm performance improved significantly after a decrease in corruption, with small and young firms benefiting the most. The study identified the channels through which corruption hampers firm performance, and noted that the allocation of capital and labor became more efficient post anti-corruption measures. Companies operating in previously corrupt environments experienced larger gains in productivity, sales growth, and lower debt costs compared to other firms, indicating that corruption creates negative externalities and is an inefficient equilibrium for an economy.
