Playing by the Rules? An Investigation of the Relationship Between Social Norms and Adolescents' Hate Speech Perpetration in Schools

Summary: The study investigated hate speech perpetration among adolescents in schools using the Social Cognitive Theory. The findings revealed a positive association between witnessing and perpetrating hate speech, with anti-hate speech norms negatively related and deviant peer pressure positively related to hate speech perpetration. Increasing levels of anti-hate speech norms weakened the relation between witnessing and perpetrating hate speech, while higher levels of deviant peer pressure strengthened this association.

Online correlates of cyberhate involvement among young people from ten European countries: An application of the Routine Activity and Problem Behaviour Theory

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that young people in Europe are facing hateful content on the Internet. This study aimed to test Routine Activity Theory and Problem Behavior Theory to understand young people's involvement in cyberhate. The results showed that cyberhate victimization was associated with lack of capable guardianship and exposure to potential offenders, while cyberhate perpetration was linked to several online problem behaviors. The findings can be used to develop intervention and prevention programs at different levels.

Motives Behind Cyberbullying Perpetration: A Test of Uses and Gratifications Theory

School classes play a crucial role in the socialization of intergroup attitudes, and students tend to adjust their attitudes to the perceived class norm over time.
