Towards a common future: revising the evolution of university-based sustainability research literature

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: The field of sustainability has evolved considerably since 1987, with university-based sustainability research becoming a central focus. However, the diverse range of research in universities makes it difficult to obtain a comprehensive understanding of its current status. There is a need for a more balanced emphasis on neglected research areas to address thematic gaps in the field.

Universities' Reporting on SDGs: Using THE Impact Rankings to Model and Measure Their Contribution to Sustainability

Elena De la Poza et al.

Summary: Higher education institutions have shown growing concerns about sustainability issues since the approval of Agenda 2030, with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 posing a challenge for HEIs in terms of efforts made to fulfill them and assess their performance. Evaluation of HEIs' disclosure of SDG information has revealed a correlation with their overall THE Impact Rankings score, with top-ranked universities showing stronger commitment to certain SDGs such as industry partnerships and peace promotion. Additionally, SDG9 and SDG17 are highlighted as the most relevant and consistent goals when aligning SDGs with HEIs' dimensions and subjects.

Mapping sustainability initiatives in higher education institutions in Latin America

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: Many higher education institutions around the world are involved in various sustainability initiatives, but there is a lack of systematic international efforts to map them, especially in Latin America. An empirical study has analyzed the current status of sustainability initiatives among Latin American HEIs, revealing that over 80% of sampled universities are incorporating sustainability with a special focus on campus operations. This study is one of the most comprehensive investigations of sustainable development trends in universities across Latin America and emphasizes the importance of understanding the different levels of emphasis on sustainable development in order to drive continued and long-term actions.
