The Devastating Clinical Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect: Increased Disease Vulnerability and Poor Treatment Response in Mood Disorders

Elizabeth T. C. Lippard et al.

Summary: A large body of evidence has demonstrated the long-term consequences of childhood maltreatment, which increases the risk for psychiatric and medical disorders. This review summarizes the effects of childhood maltreatment on vulnerability to mood disorders, highlighting the increased prevalence and associated risks. It discusses the persistent alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and inflammatory cytokines, as well as candidate genes, environmental factors, and neurobiological associations that may mediate these effects. The studies provide insights into modifiable mechanisms and guide treatment and prevention strategies.

Research Review: Developmental origins of depression - a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yingying Su et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis of 64 prospective cohort studies identified 12 prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal characteristics associated with an increased risk of depression in offspring, such as low birth weight, premature birth, and maternal smoking. The findings underscore the importance of clinical and public health interventions targeting these risk factors.

Child maltreatment and the development of psychopathology: The role of developmental timing and chronicity

Justin Russotti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of timing and chronicity of child maltreatment on the development of psychopathology during emerging adulthood. Results showed that maltreatment experiences spanning across multiple developmental periods predicted a cascade of symptoms in childhood, leading to anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, and antisocial personality disorder in emerging adulthood. Early prevention and intervention efforts to promote positive and safe parenting are crucial in reducing the burden of mental health symptoms associated with chronic maltreatment exposures.
