The power of culture: the gendered impact of family structures and living arrangements on social networks of Chinese older adults

Menghan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between culturally preferred family structures and social networks among older adults in China. The findings suggest that childless older adults receive the least support from family networks, but daughters still play an important role in providing support despite the patriarchal culture. In terms of friend networks, older men without sons are least likely to receive support, while living with a partner and sons can benefit them. There are also differences in friend network support between older rural women and older urban women when living with sons.
