First do no harm: Measuring weight bias beliefs in preschool-age children

Jennifer A. Harriger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether participation in research measuring beliefs about body size would affect the development of weight beliefs in young children. The results showed that there was no change in participants' responses from two different time periods, and there were no significant differences between the data collected from participants who completed the measures once and those who completed the measures twice, indicating that participation in this research may not pose undue risks to young children.

Hourglass Body Shape Ideal Scale and disordered eating

J. C. Hernandez et al.

Summary: Research has shown that internalizing male body ideals (such as the thin ideal, muscular ideal) can have negative consequences. However, the implications of internalizing the female hourglass body shape ideal are still unclear. The Hourglass Body Shape Ideal Scale (HBSIS) is a new tool developed to measure the extent to which women identify with the hourglass body shape ideal.

Does the tripartite influence model of body image and eating pathology function similarly across racial/ethnic groups of White, Black, Latina, and Asian women?

Natasha L. Burke et al.

Summary: The tripartite influence model suggests that pressures from family, peers, and media contribute to thin-ideal internalization, leading to body dissatisfaction and eating disorder pathology. While there are differences in mean levels of model constructs across racial/ethnic groups, the model fits similarly and shows no significant differences in the strength of model pathways between groups.

Body image and internalization of appearance ideals in Black women: An update and call for culturally-sensitive research

Alice S. Lowy et al.

Summary: Extant research on body image among cisgender Black girls and women highlights the limitations of traditional measures of body dissatisfaction and thin-ideal internalization, suggesting that they may not accurately assess this population. The paper discusses the applications of sociocultural theories in understanding body dissatisfaction and emphasizes the need for culturally-sensitive approaches and intersectionality-informed research to better address body image concerns in this group. Future directions in research, assessment, and intervention are proposed to develop more effective strategies for identifying and addressing body dissatisfaction among Black girls and women.

Colorism and Physical Health: Evidence from a National Survey

Ellis P. Monk

Summary: This study uses nationally representative data to examine the impact of perceived ingroup and outgroup skin color discrimination on physical health among African Americans. The findings indicate that perceived ingroup colorism is significantly associated with worse physical health outcomes, even exceeding the impact of major lifetime discrimination, everyday discrimination, and perceived outgroup colorism. These results highlight the importance of including measures of perceived colorism in future survey data collection efforts.

Beyond Objectification: Understanding the Correlates and Consequences of Sexualization for Black and White Adolescent Girls

Petal Grower et al.

Summary: While objectification theory suggests negative effects of self-objectification on adolescent girls, there is limited research on how objectification and sexualization impact mental health for youth of color. This study found that body surveillance and enjoyment of sexualization are related to diminished well-being for adolescent girls, with race also moderating these effects. Future research should further examine the implications of enjoyment of sexualization on mental health for youth of color.

The Curvy Ideal Silhouette Scale: Measuring Cultural Differences in the Body Shape Ideals of Young US Women

Evelyn A. Hunter et al.

Summary: A computer-generated figural scale was developed to assess the discrepancy between actual versus ideal curvy bodies among young U.S. women. The results suggest that the curvy ideal and thin ideal may be related but distinct constructs, with greater acceptance of the curvy ideal associated with decreased endorsement of body disturbance, dissatisfaction, and disordered eating. The Curvy Ideal Silhouette Scale shows potential for clinical utility as part of a multidimensional body image assessment.
