Ready or Not for Contact Tracing? Investigating the Adoption Intention of COVID-19 Contact-Tracing Technology Using an Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology Model

Michel Walrave et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the intention to use COVID-19 contact tracing apps, finding that performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, and social influence were the most important predictors. Effort expectancy was not related to intention, and innovativeness positively influenced app use intention, while app-related privacy concerns negatively affected intention. Policy makers and developers were provided with suggestions based on these results.

Tracking and promoting the usage of a COVID-19 contact tracing app

Simon Munzert et al.

Summary: The contact tracing app in Germany is underused by those who socially distance less, but small cash incentives can increase app uptake. High-risk individuals for severe illness have higher uptake rates, while those at a higher risk of exposure to COVID-19 have lower rates. Findings suggest that monetary incentives can significantly boost app uptake, making digital contact tracing a more effective tool.

Researching COVID-19 tracing app acceptance: incorporating theory from the technological acceptance model

Felix Velicia-Martin et al.

Summary: This study used the extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to investigate citizens' willingness to accept and adopt a mobile application indicating contact with COVID-19 infected individuals. Results showed that users' intention to use the app is determined by the perceived utility, with privacy concerns not being a significant barrier. Users prioritize health over privacy, and acceptance is highest among those over 35 years old who are most aware of the COVID-19 risks.

Affective empathy predicts self-isolation behaviour acceptance during coronavirus risk exposure

Serena Petrocchi et al.

Summary: This study suggests that affective empathy for the most vulnerable is a predictor of acceptance of lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although health risk exposure is a factor, social covariates and psychological distress do not have a significant impact on acceptance of lockdown measures.

Fear of COVID-19 for Individuals and Family Members: Indications from the National Cross-Sectional Study of the EPICOVID19 Web-Based Survey

Liliana Cori et al.

Summary: The study found that during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, women had higher levels of fear of infection compared to men, and fear for family members was higher than fear for oneself. People with higher education levels and those who perceived good health had lower levels of fear for themselves, while those vaccinated for flu had higher levels of fear for themselves. Fear increased with the declaration of diseases and was higher when associated with specific symptoms such as chest pain, olfactory/taste disorders, and heart palpitations.

Psychological factors shaping public responses to COVID-19 digital contact tracing technologies in Germany

Anastasia Kozyreva et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the widespread use of digital contact tracing to contain the virus, posing challenges for governments and citizens. A survey in Germany found that acceptance of privacy-encroaching measures decreased over time, but intentions to use contact tracing apps were high. Users and non-users of the Corona-Warn-App differed in their perceptions of risks and benefits, knowledge of technology, and reasons for downloading or not downloading the app. Trust in the app's security and belief in its effectiveness emerged as key factors in adoption.
