Green and climate-smart mining: A framework to analyze open-pit mines for cleaner mineral production

Izhar Mithal Jiskani et al.

Summary: Green and climate-smart mining (GCSM) has the potential to transform traditional mining practices into more sustainable ones by conserving the environment and promoting cleaner mineral production. This study proposes an indicator framework for analyzing GCSM implementation, using a case study of Chinese open-pit mines to assess the reality and desirability of GCSM indicators. The findings suggest a negative trend in GCSM performance, but improvements in efficiency of these indicators could lead to a more optimistic future for GCSM.

Investigation and analysis of fatal accidents reporting practices in the Punjab province of Pakistan and remedial measures

Atta Ur Rehman et al.

Summary: Mining is one of the most hazardous industries due to unsafe working conditions. Research on mine accidents in Pakistan has been focused, but very little attention has been given to investigating and analyzing the mine accidents reporting system in the country. The study identifies that the increase in mining fatalities in Pakistan is attributed to primitive mining practices, negligence of workers, lack of resources, slackness from regulatory bodies and mine management, and a poor accident reporting mechanism. A new accident reporting tool is proposed to improve safety by holding stakeholders accountable for accidents.

Building risk precontrol management systems for safety in China's underground coal mines

Quanlong Liu et al.

Summary: "Mining in China remains one of the most dangerous occupations, with underground coal mines having particularly high accident rates. China's safety management models are primarily passive, addressing accidents after they occur instead of preventing them. A risk precontrol management system for safety in underground coal mines has been developed, focusing on hazard identification, risk assessment, and unsafe behavior control. The system consists of four main parts: scope, normative reference documents, terms and definitions, and management elements and requirements, with the latter being the core of the system."

Air Pollution Risk Assessment Using a Hybrid Fuzzy Intelligent Probability-Based Approach: Mine Blasting Dust Impacts

Ezzeddin Bakhtavar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a hybrid risk assessment approach using artificial intelligence, probability, and fuzzy numbers to assess the risks of blast-induced dust emissions to ecosystems surrounding surface mines. The gene expression programming equation provided the best possible model for predicting dust emission distance. Monte Carlo simulation indicated that dust emission distance did not exceed certain values with confidence levels, while the results showed that the dust risk on farms was negligible to low compared to humans due to distance range.
